PIPELINE HYDROTEST AND
SUBSEA EQUIPMENT PRESERVATION CHEMICAL PRODUCTS
Champion Technologies’ Hydrosure™ range of products has been specifically developed for the treatment of fluids used for pipeline Hydrotest operations and also to mitigate corrosion from seawater contact with internal components of subsea production equipment and installations.
PIPELINE INTEGRITY
The Threat of Internal Pipeline Corrosion
The potential consequences of internal pipeline corrosion represent both safety and economic concerns to various sectors of the industry. Mitigating corrosion during pipeline hydrotest operations is critical as the initiation corrosion cells during hydrotest lay-up periods can negatively affect the integrity of the pipeline after it is put into service. Additionally, the build up of corrosion and bacterial by-products on the pipe walls can cause problems at later stages of a pipeline’s operation life including under-deposit corrosion and contamination of fluids passing through the pipe.
In most cases some type of water is used for pipeline hydrotesting and consequently there is potential for internal corrosion of the pipe to occur during the hydrotest operation. Hydrotest operations for offshore pipeline installations generally use filtered seawater as the hydrotest fluid whereas fluids used for onshore installations are generally river, ground or potable water. All waters are naturally corrosive to bare metal but river, ground and seawater are likely to be contaminated with all kinds of bacteria, algae and fungi. These waters will also contain concentrations of dissolved oxygen and inorganic minerals. The bacteria, dissolved oxygen and minerals present in these waters are aggressive accelerators to the natural mechanism of metal corrosion.
SUBSEA EQUIPMENT INTEGRITY
The Threat of Seawater Corrosion in Subsea Production Equipment
It has been established that metal corrosion from trapped seawater can have a major impact on the integrity of internal components of Subsea Production Equipment and Production Installations. Conventional methods to mitigate seawater corrosion are not always applicable or indeed physically possible for all scenarios where seawater is in contact with equipment components.
Champion’s Hydrosure™ product range includes a suite of products specifically designed to meet these unique application problems.
The main concern for treating hydrotest fluids and seawater to mitigate corrosion is to neutralise any bacteria and dissolved oxygen present in these fluids. Bacteria and dissolved oxygen are the key elements in developing chemicals and application procedures for treating Hydrotest Fluid Treatment Products and Subsea Equipment Preservations Products.
