Champion Technologies supports U.S. shale plays

By working closely with the producers in the U.S. shale plays, including the Barnett since the 1990s, Champion Technologies has learned first-hand what makes each shale formation unique and understands the economic limitations behind penetrating such dense rocks. During the past few years, Champion Technologies has invested significantly in its people, product development, and facilities to augment service and support for the shale plays in the Barnett, Haynesville, Fayetteville, Marcellus, and Bakken - and now in the Eagle Ford.

A big part of that support includes a dedicated Shale Chemicals Solutions Group that provides engineering and subject-matter expertise in treatment strategies for shale plays to maximize production rates and ultimate recovery, while minimizing well-completion and operating costs.

With oil and gas companies boosting resources to drill in the Eagle Ford - arguably the hottest single shale play area in the lower 48 states in 2011 - Champion Technologies placed more than two dozen shale chemistry advisors in facilities to serve the area, including engineers and technical personnel, operations specialists, and account representatives and managers.

Unlocking Eagle Ford Shale Potential

Located in South Texas and found in depths of 4,000 to 12,000 feet, the Eagle Ford is thought to be one of the largest oil and gas fields in the United States. Hydraulic fracturing technology used in this and other fields consists of a high-pressure mix of water, chemicals and sand to crack open dense shale rock to release oil and gas.

Champion Technologies understands that specialty chemical products and treatment programs for Eagle Ford shale wells must manage unusually severe paraffin issues because of unique crude oil characteristics and their associated challenges. Consequently, high-performance “designer” specialty chemicals were developed - including paraffin solvents and dispersants, scale inhibitors, and biocides - for downhole conditions and formation fluids encountered in hydraulically fractured Eagle Ford shale wells.

Champion Technologies’ shale experts in the Eagle Ford area draw upon the most extensive network of oilfield specialty chemical labs, fully-equipped warehouses, blending plants, trucking fleet, truck yards, and field offices in South Texas, and that infrastructure is growing to accommodate the rapid increase of Eagle Ford shale activity. These strategically-located facilities in Dilley, Hebbronville, and Victoria, form Champion Technologies’ front-line support for Eagle Ford shale wells, providing producers with 24/7 service and reliable supply points less than an hour’s travel time from most well sites.

A district office in Corpus Christi provides additional warehousing, blending, and trucking capacity. This facility also houses an ISO-certified laboratory, which performs technical assistance, analytic support, quality control, and field problem resolution with nearly 40 years of combined experience in all aspects of oil and gas production, oil and water treating, water disposal, and injection management.

Analytical services include:
  • Field testing equipment to measure key water-chemistry components, such as pH, alkalinity, and dissolved acid gases of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, for accurate calculation of mineral scaling tendencies
  • Qualitative analyses of deposits and use of centrifuge for solids/sludge determination in aqueous or hydrocarbon fluids
Robust technical support staff:
  • Help evaluate and diagnose field problems and recommend cost-effective solutions
  • Communicate and coordinate requirements for new or improved products with Champion Technologies’ research and development staff
  • Stay abreast of new products and application technologies that may be developed for other areas of the company

Champion Technologies’ technical and analytic services in the Eagle Ford shale area are augmented by an ISO-certified regional laboratory in Midland, Texas, and backed by its Global Technology Center and Manufacturing Plant in Fresno, Texas, on the outskirts of Houston, providing a sophisticated level of analytical precision to producers of Eagle Ford wells.
